Scouting has been an important part of ministry to youth at First Presbyterian Church since 1954. Scouting prepares young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. The program serves children and youth from kindergarten through age 20. Volunteer leaders deliver a program that’s fun and that builds fellowship, confidence, resilience, and character. Scout training allows for the best teacher to be involved: experience. Scouts gain a greater perspective on the world by learning teamwork in a patrol, by persisting through a long hike or a cold night camping, by noticing quiet beauty in “the cathedral of the forest,” by finding an unexpected passion as they explore skills among over 100 merit badge topics. They learn to persist to complete what they start. Over time they become courteous, brave, and reverent. They find fulfillment in cheerful service to their community.
Three Scout groups meet weekly at FPCLY for learning skills, growing as leaders, and building community.
- Cub Pack 7 (boys and girls)
- Scout Troop 7 (boys)
- Scout Troop 49 (for girls)
Each year, we celebrate Scout Sunday honoring and encouraging the many Scouts who are a part of this church community. It’s been such a gift and blessing to watch the young men and women grow and become great leaders over the years especially the ones who have achieved Eagle Scout honors.
If you have an interested child or would like to volunteer with one of our Scout groups, contact the church office at (434) 384-6231 and we will connect you! For more information about Scouting visit beascout.scouting.org.
