The Presbyterian Cemetery (located off Grace Street in downtown Lynchburg) was founded in 1823 when six elders of the local Presbyterian Church purchased two acres of land on Campbell Court House Road, now Grace Street. The land was purchased from Edward Lynch, son of Lynchburg’s founder John Lynch, and his wife, Mary. Three of the six founding elders were members of First Presbyterian Church of Lynchburg. Since the 1800s, the Presbyterian Cemetery has been a Lynchburg location filled with rich history and beautiful monuments. It is home to the graves of over 600 military veterans from the War of 1812 through the Vietnam War and has a Memorial for 9/11 and a Fireman's Memorial. It is a special, quiet place to walk, reflect, and think and stroll through some Lynchburg history! The cemetery offers walking tours, Memorial and Veteran's Day celebrations, and has openings for grave plots and columbarium niches.
FPCLY church members continue to support the Presbyterian Cemetery through financial stewardship and sponsoring Clean Up days to help beautify the grounds prior to Memorial Day and Veteran's Day!
