The First Presbyterian Church partnership with Marion Medical Mission began in the early 2000s with the beginning of our partnership in Malawi. The late Dr. Harold Riley traveled on a trip to Malawi with the group in 2001 serving as an American volunteer. His in-country translator was John Gondwe. From there a flourishing friendship developed. Over the years, we have finanically supported Marion Medical Mission with gifts toward their annual well installation. Church member Chuck Overstreet took a deep interest and passion in Marion Medical Mission in 2020 and was signed up to serve as a volunteer that fall. Due to the pandemic, his trip was cancelled. He was able to pick the baton back up in the fall of 2023 when his feet touched ground in Malawi to be part of the 50,000th well campaign for Marion Medical Mission!
Marion Medical Mission seeks to share the love of Christ with the extreme poor in Africa by providing all in need with a sustainable source of clean, safe drinking water. With a focus on "self-help" (for the indigenous Africans) and sustainability, Marion Medical Mission offers clean water through the installation of shallow water wells in rural communities AND offers the hope of living water found only in Jesus Christ through teachings, trainings, and their God glorifying well dedications. In preparation for the annual fall well installation season, the local villages provide the sand, stone and unskilled labor to prepare for the well while skilled African workers manufacture and install the intricate components of the well. During the installation season, the final pump is installed by African field officers and a well dedication celebration takes place in thanksgiving to God.
