First Presbyterian Church started partnering with Food for Thought in 2019. Our partnership with them grew from our 2018 participation with the Lynchburg City Schools weekend backpack program for students at Fort Hill Community School. In partnership with Food for Thought, we now provide weekend meal bags for 24 students at FHCC. Many of these children would go without a meal over the weekend if it weren't for these bags. Each bag contains food for 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, and 3 dinners. Our financial support provides for the main meals in the bags. Through an annual food drive done in August, we collect additional snack and "between meal" items to supplement the bags and provide additional food. See the image at the bottom of this page for some of the specific items.
Food for Thought is a backpack supplemental feeding program that provides food-insecure students with nutritious meals and snacks on Friday afternoons, to sustain them over the weekend. Hungry children have weaker immune systems, are sick more often, have difficulty paying attention in class, and are less successful academically. In addition, hunger limits social development, and is linked to behavioral problems related to stress and fatigue. Food for Thought is a part of a larger umbrella organization called Park View Community Mission that provides other resources and services to low income families.
